As humans, we tend to seek out guidance and protection from those we trust. In the same way, sheep look to their shepherd for guidance and care, we too should seek comfort in the Lord our shepherd.

In his book, “A Shepherd’s Look a Psalms 23,” Phillip Keller draws from his personal experience as a shepherd to offer insights into the love and care that a good shepherd has for his flock, and how it relates to our relationship with Christ.

One of the most powerful verses in the Bible is Psalms 23, which begins with;

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want…..”

This simple phrase encapsulates the essence of what it means to trust in God.

As we read through the rest of the psalm, we see that God’s love for us is like that of a good shepherd who leads, guides, and protects his flock. Keller shares how a good shepherd is always looking out for the needs of his sheep. He ensures they have clean water to drink, food to eat, and a safe place to rest. Similarly, Jesus provides for our needs, both physical and spiritual.

In John 10:11, Jesus says,

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

This means that Jesus loves us so much that he was willing to die for us so that we could have eternal life.

As we encounter challenges in life, it is easy to become overwhelmed and lose hope. But just as a good shepherd leads his sheep through difficult terrain, Jesus is always with us, guiding us through the valleys of life.

In Psalm 23:4, it says,

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

This passage serves as a reminder that even in the most trying of times, we are never alone and that God’s love for us is unwavering. Keller also shares how a good shepherd knows his sheep intimately. He knows their strengths, weaknesses, and personalities. In the same way, Jesus knows us intimately, and he loves us just the way we are. He accepts us for who we are, with all our flaws and imperfections.

In a nutshell, “A Shepherd’s Look a Psalms 23” is a beautiful reminder of the love and care that God has for us. He is our shepherd, and he leads, guides, and protects us through life’s journey. No matter what challenges we face, we can always find comfort in knowing that we are never alone and that God’s love for us is unchanging.

As you face life’s challenges, remember that the Lord is your shepherd and will always be there for you.
